Glory Frozen in Time. The Compton High School Tarbabes varsity basketball team after winning the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Basketball Championship at the Long Beach Arena in March of 1963. We defeated Ramona High School of Corona, Calif., 52-38. It was Coach William “Bill” Armstrong’s third CIF Title in his fifth year coaching the Tarbabes.

Immediately after our victory, we carried Coach Armstrong over to our Compton High “Student Section” to sing the alma mater as he pulled out a big red apple and took a huge bite out it as was his custom when we locked up a victory. He was by far one of the greatest coaches that ever lived in any sport and we were blessed to have him as our coach at Compton High School. The basketball court floor was recently named in his honor.

Compton High would go on to incredible success during the balance of the ’60s, including a spectacular national championship in 1969, when the team posted a national record of 66-0.
