Wilder’s Preparatory Academy Charter School has forged a path of school excellence since its genesis in 1999

INGLEWOOD (MNS) Wilder’s Preparatory Academy, a local charter school, will host Founder’s Day, March 1, 2019, from 8 to 8:30 a.m. celebrating the memory of the school’s visionary, the late Raymond D. Wilder.

A short program will pay homage to Wilder in the school gymnasium at 830 N. La Brea Ave.

According to Wilder’s bio, the educator and business icon, who passed in June 2013, planted the seed along with his wife, Dr. Carolyn Wilder, that eventually expanded to the preparatory academy, aka WPACS.

The initial thrust in education began in 1983 with the opening of the Tender Care Child Development Center, which served 180 children aged 2-5. According to WPACS history, the program offered a curriculum-based approach to learning, specifically designed to prepare children for a complete educational experience prior to elementary school.

In 1988, Tender Care Kindergarten followed to address the needs of children graduating pre-school and entering Kindergarten and accommodated 60 students. The demand progressed to higher education for higher-grade levels soon thereafter and Tender Care Elementary was established in 1994.

In 1999, Tender Care Elementary was renamed Wilder’s Preparatory Academy serving grades K-8. From there, Raymond Wilder’s vision for WPACS expanded to a 50,000 square foot state of the art facility built with inner-city students in mind, featuring 30 classrooms, three computer labs, a library, art room, indoor gym, media lab, science lab, and a study hall. According to the WPACS website, the curriculum is college preparatory

In fact, Inglewood Business Opportunity Network (IBON), Inglewood Today’s business network honored Mr. Wilder in conjunction with their annual Martin Luther King “Drum Major for Justice” Award.

In 1977, he became a licensed real estate agent and subsequently formed RACA Development Company, which specialized in developing quality, yet affordable homes, apartment complexes, condominiums, townhouses, and commercial buildings throughout Inglewood.

In August of 2011, Wilder’s Preparatory Academy Charter School was named one of the Top 10 Charter Schools in California. A report published by the University of Southern California acknowledged Wilder’s Preparatory Academy Charter School out of 800 charter schools across the State of California. Wilder’s Preparatory Academy Charter School was the only school in Los Angeles County to be among the top 10.

Wilder’s Preparatory Academy Charter School has also been recognized as a “Title 1 Academic Achievement Award School” by the California Department of Education. In 2013, Wilder’s Preparatory Academy Charter Middle School was awarded the California Distinguished School Award, and the School Charter was renewed for another five years by the Inglewood Unified School District. In 2014 Wilder’s Preparatory Academy Charter Elementary School was also awarded the California Distinguished School Award.
