COGIC founder’s daughter Ruth Mason Lewis dies at 94; The Church of God in Christ mourns her passing

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — ComptonHerald.com has learned the last remaining child of Bishop Charles Harrison Mason, the founder of the Church of God in Christ, has passed away, according to the Associated Press.

Ruth Mason Lewis was a pioneer in Shelby County, Tennessee, born on Sept. 16, 1920 in Memphis. She was married to the late Robert S. Lewis, Jr. of the historic R.S. Lewis & Sons Funeral Home.

Robert and Ruth were married for 64 years and have two children.

She was a member of Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ serving on the Mother’s Board. She was also a member of The Links, The National Smart Set, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

“The community for the Church of God In Christ will mourn her passing because of the meaning associated with her family and COGIC and its legacy and dynasty, if you would,” said Bishop Brandon Porter, head of Greater Community Temple COGIC in North Memphis, TN.

For decades, she also dedicated her life to helping children across the Mid-South develop good eating habits as she served as a nutritionist.

Ruth Mason Lewis was 94 years old.

Funeral arrangements are set for Tuesday, December 8th at Pentecostal Temple.
