LYNWOOD — The City of Lynwood Recreation and Community Services Department kicks off its 6th Annual Weight Loss Challenge, Jan. 16, 2016 with signups occurring at Yvonne Burke/Ham Park 11832 Atlantic Ave., from 7-11 a.m.

The City’s annual Weight Loss Challenge encourages friendly competition between Lynwood residents to lose pounds by eating healthy and exercising in exchange for cash at the end of 12 weeks.

Residents routinely engage in spirited rivalry. The $5,700 prize pool for the 2015 Weight Loss Challenge was the largest ever in the five-year history of the event, giving a new meaning to the maxim – “if you lose, you win.”

In the 2015, a total of 48 four-person teams signed up to participate in the event. This year more competitors are expected. The prize pool consists of entry fees and fines. Contestants who gain weight incur a fine for each pound gained. The more teams that register ultimately means a bigger prize pool.

All participants must pay an entry fee of $25 per person upon registration and weigh in at the park every Saturday for 12 weeks.

“We’re very excited that the Weight Loss Challenge is back in 2016! Since 2009, the Challenge has been the City’s lead ‘Healthy Cities’ Initiative Program,” said Mark Flores, director of Recreation and Community Services Department. “Not only has it been a great way for the community to get healthy, but it’s also been a great community builder as friends, family and neighbors compete against each other in a fun and supportive environment.

“The $31,000+ in cash prizes that have been paid out since 2009 to the winners is not bad either,” Flores added.
