COMPTON — The arts continue to flourish at King Elementary School where students staged their school’s first ever musical, on April 1, with a production of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”

King Elementary’s sixth-grader Tishouna Charles (top) as the titular Willy Wonka, and fifth-grader Herman Valle (right), as Charlie Bucket.

In collaboration with Turnaround Arts, the Compton Unified School District stage crew of over 40 students, parents, and teachers worked together to create colorful sets and costumes.

The show was directed by second grade instructor Tonya Elliott-Threat and received musical direction from music instructor Jennifer Carreras. First grade choreographer Elena Aguirre served as the production’s choreographer.

Auditions were held over the past two months with help from celebrity judges including actress Monica Horan Rosenthal (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) and Nigel Lythgoe (“So You Think You Can Dance?”).

But the show’s true stars were King Elementary’s talented cast of singers and dancers.
