The City of Compton enacted a ban on medical marijuana dispensaries of any kind in 2008. That’s on the books. Therefore, these operations are illegal within city limits. Yet, they are booming in business, making an abject mockery of the law.
City Attorney Craig Cornwell, a nice fellow, but milquetoast on crime, said he’s closed some of the dispensaries that sprang up.
Well, good golly wow, Mr. Cornwell! But, don’t pat yourself on the back, just yet, because that’s hardly enough. If you haven’t noticed, sir, some 20 new medical cannabis dispensaries have sprouted up like, well, “weeds” in 2016. The Compton Herald is in the midst of an ongoing investigation, and these establishments are doing a torrid business. The new California Gold Rush is on and “crackin’ in Compton!
We’ll state that “number,” again: Twenty! — 20 new illegal dispensaries —that’s two dispensaries per square mile. Compton doesn’t even have that many liquor stores, or churches, for that matter (but that’s another story).
We reached out to Cornwell for his view on the issue, but he’s a mite tepid about engaging us. That means this may be a one-way conversation.
Mr. City Attorney, what the hell is going on in Compton right beneath your nose? What kind of lawlessness are you allowing to fester with impunity? A blind mole can follow your trail because it stinks!
Twenty medical marijuana dispensaries is hardly a “mercy” mission, Mr. Cornwell. No, that’s a lustful grab for cash! You know it, the mayor knows it, the city council knows it, the County sheriff knows it, the dope hustlers on the street, know it. Everybody is being hustled here by somebody else — a perpetual orgy in the “Hub City!”
The mayor and council should, at least, step up to hammer down some hard statutes to regulate what is apparently being allowed to occur. But they are reticent. That’s bad, bad governance; a welcome mat to corruption, which will beget violence. And Compton doesn’t need more violence?
Mr. Cornwell, you and all of the other mucky-mucks making Compton the “Laughingstock of California Municipalities,” should just turn in your badges and quit! If you don’t, the people will meet you at the polls. Hope you have your bags packed!
Compton can do well without your brand of leadership.
