LOS ANGELES (MNS) – The City of Los Angeles will commemorate Jan. 8, 2020, the 50-year anniversary of the emergence of an iconic street dance in the early 1970’s called the “Campbellock,” created by LA-native Don Campbell.

The city will immortalize the dance, otherwise known as the “Lock,” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Crenshaw Boulevard and Stocker Avenue on the famed Crenshaw Strip, where the dance became wildly popular at many of the night clubs that occupied the Strip at the time.

Campbell, a commercial art major at LA Trade Technical College at the time gave birth to the dance – an assortment of rhythmic gyrations, stop-and-lock moves, back-claps, and splits that reflected his free-wheeling personality, and was the craze at night venues like Maverick’s Flat, the Apartment, and Chicago West.

The dedication at Crenshaw and Stocker Avenue to Campbell has strategic sentimental value because the dance club Maverick’s Flat sits just off the intersection, where Campbell was most often sited, adorned in his colorful trademark knickers, bobby socks, suspenders, platform shoes and Apple hat.

Campbell, later formed a dance troupe called the Lockers, who became mainstays on the popular weekly dance show, Soul Train, quickly catapulting to international stardom.
