Spate of mayhem, murder in Compton register worst spree in recent memory; 16 Blacks, 14 Latinos killed in 12 months

COMPTON (MNS) — A pall of tragedy hangs over this city of slightly less than 100,000 people. A lingering cloud bearing the unmistakable stench of death.

In just 12 months extending back to July 8, 2018, 30 people have perished to gun violence in one of the most deadly cities in America.

With the recent changing of the guard in the first council district with former councilperson Janna Zurita bowing to Michelle Chambers, Compton residents began reveling in what they perceived as a “new day.” but with the rash of wanton killings, the city is experiencing anything but a “new day.”

The following represents the glut of murders that have overtaken Compton like no other time in recent memory. All of the deaths were verified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s records:

  • July 8, 2018: Leondre Wayne Love, a 35-year-old Black male, was shot to death at 704 S. Holly Ave., Compton.
  • July 10, 2018: Daniel Infante Delacruz, a 33-year-old Latino male, died after being shot at 1812 N. Santa Fe Ave., Compton.
  • Aug. 3, 2018: Marcus Deandre Kerr, a 29-year-old Black male, died after being shot in the 100 block of East Cypress Street, Compton.
  • Sept. 15, 2018: Christian Raedell Jackson, a 27-year-old Black male, died after being shot in the 2000 block of North Wilmington Avenue, Compton.
  • Sept. 19, 2018: Richard Allen Jefferson Sr., a 65-year-old Black man, was fatally shot in the 600 block of West Peach Street, Compton. Jefferson, the father of former NBA basketball star Richard Jefferson, lived in Inglewood.
  • Sept. 28, 2018: Eddie Charles Talley II, a 65-year-old Black male, was fatally shot in the 600 block of West Palmer Avenue, Compton, The shooting in Talley’s home also killed his stepdaughter, Britney Malone, 13, and seriously injured his wife, Katherine Evans, according to Evans’ niece Shayla Greene.
  • Sept. 28, 2018: Britney Malone, a 13-year-old Black girl, was shot and killed along with her stepfather Edward Charles Talley, II, in the 600 block of West Palmer Street in Compton,
  • Sept. 30, 2018: Chloe Jane Hunter, a 17-year-old Black girl, was fatally shot in the 200 block of North Long Beach Avenue in Compton. Three other shooting victims, a 14-year-old girl, a 19-year-old man, and a 40-year-old man, all survived their injuries.
  • Sept. 30, 2018: Fidel Andrew Aguirre, a 28-year-old Latino male, was fatally shot on near the corner of East Ezmirlian Sreet and North Bullis Road in Compton,
  • Oct. 11, 2018: Robert Mitchell, a 37-year-old Black male, died after sustaining blunt force trauma at 1309 S. Long Beach Blvd., Compton.
  • Oct. 20, 2018: Anthony Mendoza Lopez, a 20-year-old Latino, was fatally shot in the 100 block of South Holly Avenue, Compton.
  • Nov. 26, 2018: Arthur Willis, a 34-year-old Black male, died after being stabbed in the 1800 block of West Compton Boulevard, Compton.
  • Dec. 5, 2018: Ryan Washington, an 18-year-old Black male, was fatally shot at the intersection of North Magnolia Court and North Paulsen Avenue, Compton.
  • Dec. 22, 2018: Felipe De Jesus Martinez Garcia, a 19-year-old Latino male, died after being shot in the 800 block of West Arbutus Street, Compton.
  • Dec. 22, 2018: Rogelio Villegas, a 24-year-old Latino male, died after being shot in the 800 block of West Arbutus Street, Compton.
  • Dec. 30, 2018: Demetrius Jamahl Bracken, a 43-year-old Black male, died after being shot in the 2000 block of Parmelee Avenue, Compton.
  • Jan. 7, 2019: Everardo Rosas Cardenas, a 35-year-old Latino male, died after being shot in the 800 block of South Wilmington Avenue, Compton.
  • J an. 25, 2019: Hakim Webster, a 36-year-old Black male, was fatally shot in the parking lot of the New Holy Trinity Baptist Church, 1919 E. Compton Blvd. in Compton.
  • Feb. 16, 2019: Joshua Glover, a 25-year-old Black male, died after being stabbed in the 1800 block of East Alondra Boulevard, Compton.
  • March 10, 2019: Kimberly Jassive Valadez, a 28-year-old Latina, died after being shot in the 300 block West Johnson Street, Compton
  • March 16, 2019: Gerardo Macias Hernandez, a 22-year-old Latino male, was shot and killed in the 2800 block of East Alondra Boulevard in Compton
  • March 25, 2019: Samantha Bustos Vital, a 15-year-old Latina, was pronounced dead after her body was found in the 500 block of West Victoria Street in Compton.
  • March 26, 2019: Monica Marie Abarca, a 29-year-old Latina, died from gunshot wounds at East San Luis Street and North Bradfield Avenue, Compton.
  • March 31, 2019: Luis A. Hernandez, a 21-year-old male Latino, died after being shot in the 1400 block of Sportsman Drive, Compton.
  • March 31, 2019: Rigoberto Najera, a 39-year-old Latino male, died Sunday, after being shot in Compton.
  • April 11, 2019: Twenty-seven-year old Emma Liza Melchor was found dead on after she was shot in the 1800 block of East Alondra Boulevard near an abandoned commercial building in Compton.
  • June 12, 2019: Kenyata Wante McIntosh, a 39-year-old Black male died from gunshot wounds sustained in Compton.
  • June 12, 2019: Kenyata Wante McIntosh, a 39-year-old Black male, shot to death in the 2100 block of North Grape Avenue, Compton.
  • June 27, 2019: Richard Mendoza Jr., a 36-year-old Latino male, shot dead in the 1100 block of West 134th Street, Compton.
  • July 3, 2019: Rickie Cornell Starks, a 65-year-old Black man, was shot to death near the corner of Spruce Street and Aranbe Avenue, Compton, caught in the crossfire at approximately 11 p.m. between L.A. County sheriff’s deputies and passengers in a black Cadillac Escalade owned by rapper YG.

Starks was found lying in the street near his bicycle and was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:25 p.m.
