Last alumni picnic before venerable high school is torn down and rebuilt

COMPTON – The 19th annual Compton High School Alumni Assn. (CHSAA) Picnic will be held on Sept. 21, this year, on campus in advance of the school’s demolition for reconstruction.

“Compton High School is being rebuilt. Our 19th annual picnic will be held at Compton High School this year before it is torn down,” said Judge Kelvin D. Filer, a member of CHSAA.

“The picnic will be held on the Soccer Field which is located behind the cafeteria on Saturday, Sept. 21,” he said. “Bring your EZ Ups, chairs, blankets, and lunch.  Come and help make this a memorable occasion and say ‘goodbye’ to Compton High School as we know it today,” Filer said.

The picnic is co-sponsored by the CHSAA and the the Compton Unified School District Governing Board of Trustees.

Filer added, “We need help. I’m sure you’ve heard the old saying – ‘It takes a village.’ – well, the Alumni Board needs help with ‘set up,’ helping with [child] games, and cleanup.”

“Remember the ‘Clash of the Classes’ from the last two years? Last year the Class of 1967 won and their class was placed on the plaque beside the [previous year’s] winner – the Class of 1968. The plaque is on display at Compton High School. We’ll have our Third Annual Clash of the Classes for 2019.

“The class that donates the most money at the picnic will win and their name will be included on the plaque along with the Class of 1967 and 1968. Money collected will go toward scholarships for Compton High School students.

“So, select your class representatives to collect on behalf of your class at the picnic or before,” Filer added. “However, the money has to be turned in at the picnic to be included in the competition. As usual, we will have our regular donation box at the registration table and our signature merchandise will still be sold. Look out for new designs.”

Volunteers are encouraged to call Jerry Rising to sign up at (310) 710-1122.
