(MNS) — Compton-based author Felecia Poole’s book, “In the Midst of the Storm: They Call Me Stormi,” is a riveting story of a young girl’s journey through love, sex, and betrayal, and her fight to keep her sanity and the consequences of seeking adulthood too soon. Many teens are forced to grow up before they’re ready, trapped between the frivolity of teenage illusions and the sobering reality of adult responsibility. Stormi was one of many on this slippery slope beginning as a latchkey child in a household with two working parents.
The characters in the story are skillfully crafted; the reader will walk in their shoes, as they blunder through life, vicariously experiencing their pain and discouragement. The story will cause some to look back on their own road recalling the same challenges in their development.
After rewinding the tape of like journeys through this poignant story, many readers will be humbled that their lives took a path around the pitfalls that claimed some of the youth in this tale.
“In the Midst of the Storm” will cause parents to remove the blinders and pay more attention to their teens and their associates, allowing insight into how family and spiritual values play out in a teenager’s life when confronted with the tough decisions they face daily.
Protagonist Stormi, born during a raging storm, was given the name by her father. Born at the speed of a bowel movement, she could have died during birth, but her mother saved her from falling into the toilet water. Did her nickname set the stage for her roller-coaster life? This was the making of a mad teen.
Stormi was trapped between good and evil, and having the mind of a teenager and body of an adult woman, she worked it all to her benefit. Obeying the evil voice placed Stormi in dire situations. But, remembering and reciting the prayers she learned from her mother enabled her to escape many entrapments in her young life.
Stormi and her close friend Shannon shared the kind of friendship that most never achieve in a lifetime. But something awful happened to Shannon, and Stormi was left with the dilemma of saving her friend’s life, not being a snitch, and staying true to the game—an overwhelming burden for a 14-year-old.
Every parent and teenager must read this cautionary tale. Teens will decipher the traits of a true friend and the danger in trying to become an adult too fast, the price of following the crowd and hanging with the friends that have different values and beliefs.
Parents will experience the power of prayer and how it can work in a child’s life when they confronted with tough life decisions regarding love, sex, and betrayal.
