Retailer provides pupils with needed classroom items; has supplied more than 2,000 backpacks overall

COMPTON—With the first day of school fast approaching, retailer Walmart partnered with the Compton Unified School District for its 5th Annual “Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway,” aiding children in the district get a jump on the new school year.

Eight-hundred K-12 students from several schools in the District received backpacks filled with school binders, notebooks, pencils and other supplies for the beginning of class on Aug. 17. The giant retailer will unveil a new super center in the City in 2016.

The giveaways occurred at the Compton Unified School District Pupil Services Department, located at 417 W. Alondra Boulevard. Walmart has distributed more than 2,000 backpacks to low-income children in the community in the last four years, according to a corporate spokesperson.
