COMPTON — Compton High School will host a major movie event: the screening of the film “Marshall.” The date of the screening, Oct. 2, coincides with the 50th anniversary of the historic swearing-in to the U.S. Supreme Court of Thurgood Marshall.

The legendary justice was sworn in as the first African-American U.S. Supreme Court justice on Oct. 2, 1967.

The screening at Compton High School, 601 S. Acacia Ave. [MAP], begins at 9 a.m. will be followed by a special panel discussion to be live-streamed to high schools across the U.S.

Panelists include Director/Producer Reginald Hudlin, actors Chadwick Boseman (42, Get On Up, Black Panther), Josh Gad (Frozen, Beauty & The Beast), Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us), producer/composer Marcus Miller, and Compton Unified School District Superintendent Darin Brawley. Special guest moderator will be actor/musician will.i.am.

“Marshall,” is based on an early trial in the career of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. The film follows the young lawyer (Chadwick Boseman) to conservative Connecticut to defend a Black chauffeur (Sterling K. Brown) charged with sexual assault and attempted murder of his White socialite employer (Kate Hudson). Muzzled by a segregationist court, Marshall partners with a courageous young Jewish lawyer, Samuel Friedman (Josh Gad). Together they mount the defense in an environment of racism and Anti-Semitism. The high profile case and the partnership with Friedman served as a template for Marshall’s creation of the NAACP legal defense fund.

“Marshall” opens in theaters nationwide on Oct. 13, 2017.
