Compton Herald | compton college logoCOMPTON — Compton College will host a Cash for College Fair, Sat., Feb. 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Vocational Technology Center. This event includes hands-on assistance with the application for financial aid and an informational presentation on financial aid and scholarships.

Local high school seniors, foster youth, and college-bound students are encouraged to apply for financial aid today to get cash for college, even if they think they may not be eligible. Research shows that while hundreds of thousands of California’s community college students are eligible for Federal Pell Grants, most do not apply. Amounts can change annually. The award for 2017-18 was up to $5,920 each.

Parents and students are invited to the Cash for College Fair where there will be free online computer assistance and expert guidance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well as the California DREAM Act Application. Information will also be provided for non-resident students (AB 540). Assistance and information will be provided in English and Spanish.

The Cash for College Fair is open to the public, and those attending are asked to bring their Social Security numbers or permanent resident cards, a parent’s Social Security number, if applicable; their 2016 federal income tax return or W-2 forms; and public assistance aid information (TANF, SNAP, SSI, Unemployment and/or General Relief). Students are also asked to have their parents attend with them. This year, applicants may complete the 2018-19 FAFSA using 2016 income tax information, rather than having to wait to use information from 2017 tax returns.

The FAFSA deadline is March 2, and students must apply by then in order to be considered for Cal Grant A, B, and C eligibility for the 2018 award year. Students who do not meet the March 2 application deadline will have limited access to financial aid options.
