RUNNING SPRINGS, Calif. – Summer got off to a great start for 60 Compton boys who spent a weekend enjoying the wilderness, fresh air, exercise, and meeting new friends at the Compton My Brother’s Keeper Initiative Boys Touring Summer Camp.

A three-day event which fostered self-awareness and the meaning of manhood for junior high school boys, the Boys Touring Camp supports the city of Compton’s embrace  of President Obama’s “My Brother’s Keeper Challenge.”

Boys in sixth through eighth grade were treated to a stimulating weekend of swimming, zip lining, and mountain biking with the San Bernardino Mountains as the backdrop while being mentored on responsibility, accountability, leadership, teamwork, and education.

Boy and girl scout camp is a treasured memory for many of us in our 50s and 60s. Most of the troops were organized by our parents in churches and schools. This adventure might give parents the idea to organize groups or join existing scouting groups.
