L.A. County Board of Education approves Paragon Academy of Compton; doors open in Aug. 2018COMPTON – Paragon Academy of Compton, a tuition-free, college preparatory, public charter school serving students in TK/Kindergarten through 8th grade was approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Education on Sept. 5, 2017. Paragon Academy will open its doors to 112 Transitional Kindergarten /Kindergarten (TK/Kindergarten) and 1st-grade students in August 2018.
Within a structured, ambitious, and supportive community, driven by academic excellence for all children, Paragon Academy of Compton educates students for academic success, college readiness, and a life of opportunity, says its founder and executive director, Sandra Kinne.
“All children, regardless of zip code, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status deserve a high-quality education,” Kinne said. “At Paragon Academy, college begins in kindergarten, and all children will read at or above by grade level by the end of second grade.
“Our families know how important it is for their children to have the skills, habits, and mindsets that will allow them to earn a four-year degree. This strong foundation sets all children up for success so they can get to and through college and create lives of opportunity for themselves and their families, Kinne added.
As a TK/Kindergarten through 8th-grade school, Paragon Academy offers a seamless transition from elementary school to middle school and a structured environment focused on eliminating opportunity and achievement gaps.
Founded on the belief that all children can excel in an achievement-orientated environment, Paragon Academy draws on the best practices of some of the highest-performing urban public charter schools throughout the country: an extended school day and year; twice as many minutes on literacy as in local schools; Latin instruction in grades 3 – 8; daily PE, Mindfulness instruction, and Enrichment blocks; extensive training and support of teachers, including weekly professional development blocks, which includes 31 days throughout the year.
“[Paragon is] a school culture infused with structure and zest, and a strong belief that “it takes a village” – parents are our partners, and we are grounded in and by our community,” Kinne explained. “All Paragon Academy scholars will know that they are college bound.”
Paragon Academy Board Chair Anthony Napolitano is looking forward to the challenge.
“We are honored and excited by this opportunity to work with the families and community of Compton to create a high-performing charter school,” she said. We look forward to our August 2018 opening and being able to educate the children of Compton to ensure that they are academically successful and prepared for college.”
