The Music Center in LA hosted the three-day Blue Ribbon Children’s Festival, California’s longest-continuing free arts education initiative

Students from Juan De Anza Elementary in Hawthorne were among 18,000 fifth graders from throughout Los Angeles County who were part of the 47th annual Blue Ribbon Children’s Festival at the Los Angeles Music Center recently. The three-day event invited students to a performance of Ailey II, the celebrated dance company of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion before performing a synchronized dance inspired by the Ailey II on the Music Center Plaza.

Students work for weeks to perfect the piece especially choreographed for them. For many children, The Blue Ribbon Children’s Festival marks their first opportunity to experience a live performing arts event. Photo courtesy of The Music Center.
